So how do you get the admission gods to get to know you through this impossible writing assignment?
Put on some music. Do you ever hear a song that evokes a physical reaction, whether tears, a smile, or a hurt deep in your gut? Whether it’s the melody, the words, or the way it’s so relatable to some part of your life, think about which songs do that to you.
I swear if I hear Brandy Clark sing Take a Little Pill again, I will turn into a puddle. That song is written in the fibers of my soul. And that is how deep you need to go. Take all the love, all the hurt, all the joy that’s been brewing and growing from as far back as you can remember, and make it matter. Allow the reader to sit next to you and go through it with you. You must find a way to evoke emotion in the same way that hearing (insert song that turns you into a blubbering mess) does.
How does a song = material for your essay? The chills, tears, desire to go hurt someone you get from a song tells you, on some level, who you are and finds crevices you may not know are there. Songs are stories that expose pain points, love, and life, as should your essay.
There’s a reason a certain lyric feels like it was written for you. Find a way to connect that lyric to a piece of your life, and use that as inspiration to tell your story.
