OK. Bridget Fonda may be dead-sexy, but…
Single-white-femaling is not. We know that reading makes us better writers, and we all need inspiration now and again, but there’s a point we have to cut it off.
I have several writers that I admire. While I love them, I don’t want to be them (or do I?). It can be downright depressing to read their flawless work, time after time.
Let your readers get to know you. Not through a lens of uncle Herbert or grandpa Roy, or that crazy ex-boyfriend who continues to stalk your Insta. If your mother can read it without being at least a little uncomfortable, revise!
A noteworthy and simple piece of advice I use daily: Be genuine. It’s effortless to be genuine. We all revise, we all think it over. But my final drafts are at least 80% of my initial draft. Why? Because that was the genuine feeling coming from my heart. To delete and rewrite all of it to sound “perfect” is losing part of that true grit emotion, your true voice… and that makes you human and relatable.
If you’re boring, your essay should be boring. If you’re balls-out, well.. you get the point.
Now, quit googling all those canned college admissions essays that are cheesier than those cringe-worthy inspirational canvases they call art. Use what’s in your heart. For inspiration, try these fun activities to clear your head:
• dance
• drive
• take a long, hot shower
• run, walk, do yoga, box
And when all else fails, sleep on it and try again tomorrow.
