How To Write a Kick-Ass College Admission Essay Part III: Dig Deep(er)

Let's be honest.
How many times have you heard or said these things:

• It’s as good as I can do
• I’ve done everything I could
• It’s as good as it’s gonna get

But, please (if you will):

Breathe in and out, and truly.....honestly......brutally ask yourself:

IS IT?

To write is to dig as far down as you'll let yourself go. It's a dance of the heart and the mind, and trust me- it.can.be.HARD AF. Yeah, I said it.

It may seem like you’ve given it your all, but have you taken the time to sit down and think in depth about your childhood and upbringing, for instance?

Who cares about your childhood, you ask? A few people truly do (God bless them) but most of all, digging into those details allows your reader to discover the most remarkable things about you, and this is called life experience.

Not everyone (i.e. NO ONE) has your upbringing or your story so please, pretty please - use it, joke about it, make us cry about it.

For starters, you can ask yourself the following:
Was your mom the wanderlust toothless gas station attendant? Were you neighbors with Spielberg? Was your aunt Eloise with uncontrollable gas and tangerine lipstick the school bus driver?

I won’t tell you which of these (or all) that applied to me, so we’ll leave it at that.

But truly, how did you get here? Be introspective. Trace events in your past that triggered how and why you are right here right now. There are undeniable connect lines if you think about it hard enough.

As for me, my dad told me throughout my childhood that if I was looking for sympathy, I could find it between sh*t and syphilis in the dictionary. Needless to say, his charming anecdote undoubtedly gave me very thick skin. So there, something original (albeit sick and twisted) that will stick with me forever and always.

Figure out childhood events that shaped who you are. How did these events lead you on this path to apply to this particular college in this precise moment in time? Write them out and use them to craft your story.

Spoiler alert: This is no small task.
